Living Fast But Not Well
Thursday, May 29, 2008 at 08:11PM Too Busy To Be Happy
I agree with Robert Holden, Ph.D., Director of The Happiness Project, when he says: "We live in a Success Culture." In his new book Success Intelligence he challenges us to escape the "insanity of success" that leaves us manic, hyper, and busy to the point of distraction. It's certainly no mystery that balance is the secret to sustainable success.
How Much Success is Enough?
Robert Holden's study of success reveals a hidden side of its pursuit. "People crave success because they hope it will deliver them from the ego's self-attack. They hope that being able to say 'I've made it' will silence the inner taunts." From my years of coaching leaders, executives, entrepreneurs and professionals, I know it doesn't.
Soulful Success - 3 Happiness Tips
In a recent O Magazine article Gabrielle LeBlanc identified 5 things happy people do. Here are the 3 that I invite you to practice. ![]()
-
Find Your Golden Self - Radically accept the Best You. Tell the negative voice in your head to "shut up." Practice paying closer attention to your unique personality, talents, skills and abilities. Focus on what you do well. Do more of it.
-
Avoid "If Only" Fantasies - Thinking "If only...I had a better job, a different boss, or a relationship with Mr. or Ms. Right" keeps you stuck in the reality of your current situation. Accept what is. Then take inspired action steps to change it.
- Design Your Life to Bring You Joy - In a recent study David Schkade, PhD, and his colleagues asked more than 900 working women to write down everything they'd done the day before. When they saw how much time they spent on activities they didn't like, some of the women had tears in their eyes. Do you share their surprise in realizing that happiness is something you can give yourself? Tip joy in your favor. Shift one hour of your day from an activity you hate to one you like. Notice the difference.
